Headed by Dr. Daniel Von Hoff, TGen’s Pancreatic Cancer Research Laboratory focuses on genetic and biochemical approaches to identify diagnostics and molecular targets for the development of new therapies for pancreatic cancer. Dr. Von Hoff and his team were instrumental in the development of one anti-cancer agent (gemcitabine) that significantly improves survival rates of patients with pancreatic cancer.

My mother died of Pancreatic cancer December 13,2008. I was 19 years old. I made this video five months ago, trying to find ways to cope with her death. The pictures are all of things that she loved, from saints, I love Lucy, to Hocus Pocus. This song by Cat Stevens was played that night by a dear friend of the family.

For nearly two years, Tara Nicole Stout battled Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She faced her disease with grace, honesty, humor and courage. Tara shared much of her journey in this video. On September 26, 2007, Tara died. She was ten years old. Despite incredible advances in the treatment of childhood cancers, not every child survives. Tara’s story reminds us that we must never rest until cures for this, and other diseases of childhood, are found. That is our responsibility to her and to all the children we serve. We honor Tara’s memory and we thank her for giving us this extraordinary gift, Diary of Hope.

So yesterday I heard about Donna’s “Crappy News” (www.youtube.com/user/Journey2betrhealth )… I have actually been working on this video, slowly but surely, for the last couple of weeks. A friend of mine just found out she has breast cancer, and is going through treatment right now. Another friend of mine just found out that her battle against breast cancer is not over, like she had thought. From Buffalo – Elevated vitamin D levels may lower risk of age related macular degeneration in some women, according to a report published in the Archives of Ophthalmology. Studying over 1300 women, researchers found that women younger than 75 who consumed the most amount of vitamin D through foods and supplements had a 59% reduced risk of developing early AMD. From Maryland – A new report published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute examines increased cancer risk among HIV patients. Researchers found that while risk of HIV patients developing AIDS defining cancers, such as non-Hodgkin lymphoma, went down –the risk of developing non-AIDS defining cancers such as lung, liver and anal cancer increased. And finally, from Scotland – A specific filter put on diesel engine exhausts can greatly reduce harmful particles, according to a report published in Circulation. Laboratory tests revealed that a particle trap attached to a diesel engine exhaust was able to filter out 98% of the tiny pollutants. These finding s could significantly reduce heart and lung disease.
