 SAANICH – Despite assurances from the provincial government that Japan poses no nuclear threat to British Columbia, the run on pharmacies continues. Druggists are busy filling orders for potassium iodide tablets, to help ward off thyroid cancer in case of radiation exposure. “Ever since Saturday we’ve had many calls from the public inquiring about the availability of potassium iodide tablets”, says Ian Lloyd of Cadboro Bay People’s Pharmacy. The Province is recommending pharmacists no longer dispense the potassium iodide pills. Most pharmacists now require a prescription for the drug, once available over the counter. An earthquake kit containing the bare essentials; food, water purification tablets, and basic medicals supplies sells for about 35 dollars, if you can find one. Retailers can’t keep up with demand.
