From Maryland, research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association today shows that the risk of contracting bladder cancers in smokers is higher than previously thought. The study also revealed that smoking is responsible for half of the cases bladder cancers in women, approximately double the impact previously thought. From Italy, research published today in The Lancet reveals that acute manic episodes are much more effectively controlled with antipsychotic drugs rather than mood stabilisers. The current research has the potential to impact standard clinical practice guidelines in a condition that affects roughly 1% of the population. From New Jersey, research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has a shown further evidence that caffeine can help guard against certain skin cancers. The scientists believe that topically applied caffeine could inhibit a protein enzyme in the skin that is involved in non-melanoma skin cancers.

Prostate Enlargement Causes Part 1

Posted: 22 Sep 2011 08:12 PM PDT

www.balancedhealthtoday.com http All his life, he slept like a stone. But now, there’s an annoying trip to the bathroom every night, sometimes once or twice a night. For most men, these nightly bathroom runs may be the first sign of an enlarged prostate. Other symptoms may include trouble starting a stream of urine, leaking, or dribbling. And, like gray hair, an enlarged prostate is a natural by-product of getting older, doctors say. Trouble is, the nightly bathroom runs become more frequent — eventually edging their way into the daytime routine. “They can’t sit through a meeting or a plane flight without getting up,” says Kevin Slawin, MD, a professor of urology at Baylor School of Medicine in Houston. “It’s very annoying … and when they have to go, they really have to go.” It’s a problem that has several names — enlarged prostate, benign prostate hyperplasia, or simply BPH. According to the National Kidney and Urological Disease Information Clearinghouse, the most common prostate problem for men over 50 is prostate enlargement. By age 60, over one-half of men have BPH; by age 85, the number climbs to 90%, according to the American Urological Association (AUA). Pelvic Floor Exercises and The Bits Below the Belt DVD Surgery to treat men with prostate cancer is often followed by months of difficulty controlling urine flow, a condition known as urinary incontinence. But new research suggests that this problem may go away more quickly if the men perform certain exercises to strengthen their pelvic floor muscles. Researchers from the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, found that men who were taught how to perform pelvic floor exercises before and after surgery were more likely to have regained continence three months later. Men Doing Pelvic Exercises Recover Earlier In the current study, the researchers randomly assigned 38 men scheduled for radical prostatectomy to either a treatment group or a control group. The men in the treatment group were referred to a physical therapist. They were instructed how to do Pelvic Floor Exercises both before and after surgery, using biofeedback to ensure they were using the proper muscles. The control group did not receive any formal instruction. All of the men completed questionnaires regarding bladder function at regular intervals over the next year. Overall, 82% of the patients had regained continence (defined as not needing to use any absorbent pads) by the end of the year, including about equal numbers in both groups. But on average the men who had been educated about Pelvic exercises regained continence about one month earlier than those in the control group (at 12
