New Colon Cancer Screening Methods Available Posted: 13 Aug 2011 12:01 AM PDT
A new breakthrough in colon cancer screening will allow people to test for the disease from the comfort of their own homes. The method, which is currently in testing at the Mayo Clinic, will be available next year. It works by looking for a DNA mutation in a person’s stool that could indicate the presence of colon cancer. This method isn’t meant to replace a regular colonoscopy, but to be another way to help in diagnosing and and increasing the survival rate through early detection. The survival rate for colon cancer has gone up over the past 20 years, mainly due to awareness of the disease. Changes can be made to your diet to reduce your risk of colon cancer such as eating more fruits and vegetables, being sure to get enough fiber, and avoiding red meat and animal fats. It’s also incredibly important to be screened regularly. Screening methods vary, so be sure to talk to your doctor. Dr Reber Speaks on Criteria for the Resection of Pancreatic Cancer Posted: 12 Aug 2011 09:51 PM PDT
For surgeons, pancreatic cancer is the most challenging of the gastrointestinal malignancies. The tumor has spread in 80% of cases even before the diagnosis is made, so that surgical resection is an option in only about 20%. The operation (Whipple procedure) is the most complex of general surgical procedures, and cures less than 20% of those who undergo it. Nevertheless, some patients are cured by surgery (and additional medical therapy), and all patients who have ever been cured have had the tumor surgically removed. Thus, surgical resection will remain a central feature in the management of this disease for the foreseeable future.
A tribute to my dear, wonderful mother and her brave fight against pancreatic cancer. ~Mom, you mean more to me than you could ever possibly know. I love you with all my heart and then some.~ |
