Histopathology Skin –Malignant melanoma
![]() This video was created for a class project in FCM 8420 Epidemiology at the University of Missouri, Columbia, Spring 2010 in order to address common misconceptions among parents and proper sun protection for their children. Many people believe having a tan and being outside in the sunlight are both fun and healthy, but few individuals realize that most sun damage occurs within the first 20 years of life. One large cross sectional study done in Germany on 1812 children (2-7 years old) who attended different day cares found a strong protective statically significant association between wearing more pieces of clothing (T-shirt, swimsuit/trunks, shorts) and the number of melnocytic nevi among the children. Additionally, a Canadian interventional randomized study evaluated the effect of applying sunscreen on the development of nevi in white school children in grades 1 and 4 and found that children in the interventional group developed less nevi after three years compared to the control group. Concerns about vitamin D deficiency have also arisen as a result of sun protection. Yet, sunscreen use has not been shown to negatively correlate with vitamin D levels. Ideally, sun exposure varies for each individual based on a variety of factors including skin type, diet and lifestyle. Minimizing intense sun exposure (10 am -4 pm), wearing long sleeve shirts, putting on more clothing pieces, and applying sunscreen were found to be effective in decreasing the risk of melanoma. EIU Dietetics graduate student Laura Humann, discusses healthy alternative lifestyle choices.
Filming version two. This is a multimedia exhibit in Second Life about my recent experience with Thyroid cancer. I actually built it before the entire process was finished, but it’s designed to give people a sense of what it’s like to get a cancer diagnosis, and go through thyroid cancer treatment. It’s a visual, audio, and text-based experience; in this video, you will mostly get the audio and visual part of it. The narrative come across in the text, which I realize will be hard to read in this format. For more information about it, go here: www.mazar.ca To see the live exhibit, you can go here: slurl.com |

Bryant Gumbel Cancer: Announces Lung Cancer On “Regis” Posted: 05 Aug 2011 09:42 PM PDT
hitcreatormusic.com Bryant Gumbel announced Tuesday morning that he had cancer surgery two months ago to remove a malignant tumor on his lung. Gumbel, 61, was guest-hosting “Live! with Regis and Kelly,” filling in for Regis Philbin, who recently underwent successful hip replacement surgery. Gumbel told viewers that he kept his surgery private, and that part of his lung was removed in the surgery. He and his doctor hope that his treatment is completed. “We had told a few people, we told my family, obviously,” Gumbel said. “I even kept it from my staff at ‘Real Sports.’ So I’m okay for the time being.” Gumbel said that he is seeing his surgeon next week. “I’m hoping they greenlight me to play golf again,” he said. Gumbel is the host of HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.” He spent 15 years as co-host of NBC’s “Today” show.
While this is very personal and hard for me, I wanted to post it. My dad went from a strong healthy man, to this in a matter of months after a short fight against lung cancer. If you smoke, I KNOW first hand how hard it is to quit, but you dont want to go through this, or have your loved ones watch you go through it. |
