As cigarette smoking doubles the risk of kidney cancer, the best way to decrease your risk of developing kidney cancer is to discontinue smoking. Other than smoking, the only substantial risk factors for the development of kidney cancer are related to family history. Obviously, no one can change the family they are born into, so the risk factor of having someone in the family with a history of kidney cancer, or rare genetic diseases such as von Hippel Lindau and polycystic disease cannot be prevented.
